Interviews can be daunting, but thorough preparation can significantly boost your confidence and increase your chances of success. Whether you’re a seasoned professional or stepping into a new industry, here’s a structured approach to ensure you’re ready to make the best impression.

           1. Understand the Role and Company

Before stepping into an interview, take the time to research the company and the role you’re applying for.

            Review the job description

and align your skills and experience with the key requirements.

            Visit the company’s website

to understand its mission, values, and recent news.

            Check LinkedIn and industry news

for insights into the company culture and leadership.

            Know your interviewers

if possible, by looking at their professional backgrounds on LinkedIn.

           2. Prepare Your Responses to Common Questions

Most interviews will include a mix of general and job-specific questions. Prepare for these in advance:

            Tell me about yourself.

            – Keep it concise and relevant, highlighting your experience and key strengths.

Why do you want to work here?

            – Show you’ve done your research and align your values with the company’s mission.

What are your strengths and weaknesses?

            – Focus on strengths that relate to the job and weaknesses that you’re actively improving.

           3. Prepare Questions for the Interviewer

A good interview is a two-way conversation. Show your engagement by preparing thoughtful questions, such as:

Let’s say you hire me. In a year, what kind of metrics would let me know I’ve done a good job before we go into my annual review?

When you were interviewing here, what would you have liked to know before you joined?

If I were to start in this position, what is the single biggest contribution I could make in the first few weeks?

           4. Practice and Rehearse

Rehearse your responses out loud to build confidence. You can:

Conduct mock interviews with a friend or mentor.

Record yourself to refine your tone and body language.

Use online interview preparation tools to practice under timed conditions.

           5. Dress Appropriately and Plan Logistics

Your presentation matters. Choose an outfit that aligns with the company’s culture (formal for corporate roles, business casual for startups). If the interview is in person, plan your route and arrive 5-10 minutes early. For virtual interviews, check your internet connection, camera, and microphone in advance.

           6. Be Ready to Showcase Your Work

If relevant, bring work samples, a portfolio, or a presentation that demonstrates your expertise. Have a copy of your resume and any notes handy to reference during the conversation.

           7. Follow Up After the Interview

Within 24 hours, send a personalised thank-you email expressing appreciation for the opportunity. Reiterate your enthusiasm for the role and briefly mention something discussed during the interview.

           Final Thoughts

Interview success comes down to preparation, confidence, and authenticity. By researching the company, practicing your responses, and asking thoughtful questions, you’ll set yourself apart as a strong candidate.

Best of luck with your next interview

I hope you enjoyed the break with family and friends and are ready for 2025! As we often do, I thought it would be worth sharing some insights on the industry and market trends in the buildings and property space.

As you are all acutely aware, 2024 presented significant challenges for many businesses in the buildings and property engineering space. As we have previously discussed, Tier 1 consultancies were impacted most heavily by the slowdown and scaling back of civil infrastructure projects that included significant buildings components.

The squeeze in civil infrastructure, coupled with reduced spending in tertiary education (not expected to recover until late 2025 or early 2026) and social infrastructure, left many scrambling for projects. Contracts and risk constraints meant many Tier 1 consultancies were simply unable to even price work on smaller projects that were keeping key competitors in the Tier 2 space busy. This downturn in work saw a heavy focus on profit and loss, subsequently leading to sweeping redundancies.

Not all was lost for Tier 1 engineering consultancies. Indeed, those who had been able to secure work across the data centre/mission-critical assets and health sectors were able to retain their teams and, in some cases, continue to grow.

Talent Drain to Tier 2 Consultancies

2024 also saw candidates across the industry seek out opportunities within the Tier 2 and Tier 3 spaces. The volatility experienced by many Tier 1 consultancies shone a bright light on two key areas:

Firstly, the contractual flexibility and insurances held by Tier 2 consultancies allow them to compete across a much broader range of project types and sizes, thus providing a much more stable environment with regards to forward workload.

Secondly, the freedom experienced by Tier 2 consultancies when it comes to decision-making. Rather than making decisions on a quarter-by-quarter basis to satisfy overseas stakeholders, Tier 2 consultancies understand that retaining teams despite reduced profits in the short term will ultimately lead to a stronger presence and market share in the future—something they will no doubt benefit from over the coming 18 months.

These two factors, coupled with the opportunity for things like shareholding and profit shares, saw a talent drain from many Tier 1 consultancies who had “seen behind the curtain” to large national Tier 2 consultancies where they did not have to sacrifice the types or sizes of projects they’ve enjoyed.

           The Year Ahead

While it is easy to focus on the negatives, the year ahead should give us pause for positivity. As recently as this week,

Gareth Aird, the Commonwealth Bank’s Head of Australian Economics

, stated that he expects the Reserve Bank of Australia to drop the interest rates by 0.25% in February.

While it is unlikely that a change in the market would be reflective of a fire hose being activated, interest rate drops will certainly see the flow of projects start to move again. Yes, a reduction in the cash rate always has an impact on residential apartment projects, but the effect will have a far broader impact on the buildings and property space.

Allow me to outline how this singular act cascades through the industry:

An interest rate drop sends a positive message to developers who are increasingly wary of escalating costs. Dropping the cash rate at least provides some peace of mind to the private sector that the cost of borrowing money will not add to these escalating costs.

Reduced cost of borrowing money, in turn, leads to an increase in borrowing capacity, which has a significant impact on “off-the-plan” sales for both apartments and house-and-land packages.

Lower interest rates increase aggregate demand by stimulating spending

. This increase in consumer spending is usually followed by an uptick in economic growth, providing further confidence to the private sector.

Reduced interest rates also significantly impact urban sprawl and the number of first-home buyers building their first homes in the outer suburbs.

Increased demand for house-and-land packages will see subdivision projects (which are often staged) kick-start additional stages to meet the demand for land plots.

Often, town planning for major subdivision projects necessitates the need for developers to incorporate the social infrastructure required to support these new communities.

Renewed investment in social infrastructure subsequently sees the release of projects like retail and shopping precincts, medical centres, childcare centres, schools, etc., to meet the needs of these emerging communities.

While 2025 is unlikely to see the floodgates open, there is a lot of positive sentiment at the moment. 2025 looks set to be a year of strategic growth in preparation for a very busy 2026!

COVID Created Lazy Recruiters

           COVID Created Lazy Recruiters

When did we start to accept mediocracy?

Before founding Sourcey, my previous role had seen me move away from recruitment on a day-to-day basis. My focus and passion have always been in engineering within the buildings and property space, primarily centred on building services and structures.

Next month, Sourcey will hit our 18-month milestone. It has certainly been a rollercoaster, but the opportunity to get back into the market and talk to clients and candidates about their aspirations for the future has been nothing short of rejuvenating. That being said, the recruitment industry has changed significantly in the four years I stepped away from recruiting on a day-to-day basis — and not for the better. It can be summed up in one sentence:

           Post-Covid conditions rewarded lazy recruiters.

A sweeping statement, for sure, but the industry has changed so let me break this down into what recruiters are not doing anymore.

           Meeting candidates in person.

You can make as many excuses as you like, but the truth is, if you’re genuinely interested in understanding what’s important to the candidates you work with, you need to meet with them and listen to their story. A five-minute phone conversation and gaining permission to send a CV does nothing to ensure a sustainable, long-term match between client and candidate.

           Taking references on candidates

. This isn’t simply about checking if a candidate’s CV is accurate and reflective of their responsibilities. It’s imperative to understand how a candidate fits into a team, how they are best managed, and where they excel. Without this information, you are not in a position to inform a candidate’s new employer on how best to support them during their transition.

Meeting candidates even when they are not open to new opportunities.

Most of the candidates I meet with aren’t actively seeking new opportunities. I meet them to better understand their aspirations for long-term growth. Understanding their longer-term goals and keeping in regular communication not only helps them maintain focus on their career progression but also provides an opportunity to offer industry advice or guidance as a specialist recruiter in a clearly defined market.

Working actively to help Candidates find their next role.

Granted we can not help every candidate we meet with for variety of reasons. But if a recruiter has told someone they can help them the onus is on the recruiter to do the work, talk to their clients and help to unearth those opportunities. Sending an email to your contact list about a candidate and hoping someone emails is a disservice to the trust that candidate has placed in you.

           Meeting prospective clients in person.

If a candidate entrusts you with their career move and you’re promoting a business or opportunity that aligns with their career motivators, you have a moral obligation to know as much about that employer as possible, sharing both the positives and any developmental areas they may have. Without visiting an office, meeting a client, or interacting with some of their team, how can you, in good conscience, promote a business?

           Conducting background checks on clients.

My career has been defined as much by the companies I choose to work with as by those I choose not to. Understanding the reputation of both the leaders and clients you work with underpins your ability to help candidates make informed decisions. Cultures can change over time, and having the courage to raise issues with a client—and being prepared to walk away if they are unwilling to evolve—is the epitome of integrity.

           Loyalty to clients.

If you are a trusted recruitment partner to an organisation, you shouldn’t be approaching their staff with one hand while working on their roles with the other. I’m not sure where this change crept in over the last four years, but the cut-throat, transactional nature of recruitment isn’t sustainable and is a quick way to burn bridges.

If you’re an employer reading this, I would encourage you to take stock and ask yourself what you expect from the recruiters you partner with. What should their process include, and what are your non-negotiables? Having built teams myself, I know how exhausting the recruitment process can be, but a robust process and clear expectations from your recruitment partners are crucial to avoid treading water.

If you’re a candidate reading this, and your recruiter hasn’t taken the time to meet you, ask yourself how invested this recruiter is in understanding who you are and where you want to go.

And finally, to industry peers: Desperate flicking of CV's of candidates you have never met is not enough. Care about what you do. Care about your clients and your candidates more than your placement fee. the industry is cyclical but our approach and service should not be. It is on us to raise the bar and add value to our clients and candidates. We are trusted advisors to the candidates we work with, and it’s time to step up and meet this responsibility.

Hiring Trends in a Normalised Market

           What you need to know!

The hiring landscape is shifting as we move into a normalised or, dare I say it, "cooling" market. Over the past three years, we witnessed a dramatic upswing in opportunities following one of the most challenging periods our industry has ever seen. For many businesses, the ability to capitalize on these opportunities hinged on attracting and retaining staff. This led to an unprecedented shift in the power dynamics of hiring and interviewing. Salaries skyrocketed, companies introduced a range of benefits, and remote work flexibility saw a massive uptake.

However, with the slowdown in infrastructure projects and the drying up of tertiary education projects, we are now experiencing a period of normalization. Whether you're a candidate actively looking for work or a client looking to grow, there are a few uncomfortable truths to consider.

           For Candidates:

Recent Job Movers: If you changed jobs in the last three years with a significant pay rise and have recently been made redundant, there's a fair chance your salary might not align with your capability.

Returning to Buildings: If you moved to infrastructure (structural consultants, I am talking to you) and are now looking to return to buildings, expect a salary similar to what you had before your move.

WFH Expectations: If you're accustomed to working two or more days a week from home, know that this is the exception, not the rule. Most businesses now allow only one day from home with compulsory in-office days.

Salary Realities: If you're considering a move because your friends received big pay raises in the past couple of years, you might have missed the boat. There are more candidates available or looking for work, and salaries are starting to normalize. You can still expect a “bump,” but not the $25k-$30k hikes candidates saw two years ago.

           For Employers:

Market Competition: Yes, the market has slowed, and if you're interviewing candidates who are out of work, you are in a stronger position. However, there is still competition for candidates. Regardless of someone’s circumstances, you still need to be more attractive than your competitors.

Passive Candidates: Passive candidates are even more hesitant to move. Ask yourself why someone would leave a secure job to join your business. If your answer includes culture, project quality, or reputation, you need to quantify and demonstrate these factors and explain why they can't be found elsewhere.

WFH Flexibility: 83% of candidates in professional services have said they wouldn't consider roles without at least one WFH day per week. If you don’t currently offer this, that's okay, but you won't attract the best people. The question often arises: “Why would I leave a secure job to join a business that doesn't trust me to work from home? It raises questions about their culture.”

Competitive Salaries: EAP, health & wellness days, and WFH are fantastic initiatives and will significantly impact staff retention. However, you still need to be competitive with salaries. Offering these perks while giving a standout candidate a pay cut won't work.

As the market normalises, both candidates and employers must adjust their expectations and strategies. The dynamic has shifted, but with the right approach, opportunities for growth and success remain abundant.

How To Build A Career In Recruitment

           Starting from solid foundations

An aspiring recruiter recently asked me what it takes to be successful in recruitment and how best to approach the early days in your career.

In the context of the current market, I thought this was a really interesting question. Of course, I’ve been asked similar questions before and usually spoken about passion and hunger to be successful, but the truth is these will only get you so far.

If I think back on the success that I’ve had in my career, and the relationships that I’ve built over a decade, in engineering, there are a number of things that have been contributing factors to not just short-term success but sustained relationships in the industry. I think these can be boiled down to five main areas.

           Empathy

Not always the first thing that comes to mind when you think about recruiters. That being said, I truly believe this is one of the most important foundations to be able to grow your career from. A lot of people will say listening is a key skill, and that is undoubtedly true, but it goes beyond this. Listening is not enough. It has to be coupled with a genuine desire to understand and empathize with someone’s current situation, their frustrations, and their hopes and aspirations for the future. Everyone’s situation is different, and understanding what is important to people is absolutely imperative in establishing a long-term fit for both candidates and clients.

           Curiosity

Many recruiters will start working in a sector or an industry they have no prior experience or knowledge of. You can spend weeks or even months researching your industry and you’ll only be scratching the surface. It’s important to realize that most of your candidates and clients will not only have spent four years studying in their given fields but also years practicing in the industry. It is simply impossible to catch up and think that research online will prepare you for the market that you work within.

That being said, industry knowledge is like making a cake; you don’t start with the icing. The first step is asking questions about what your candidates do on a day-to-day basis and really strive to understand the nature of their roles. The more candidates you speak to, the more you will understand how responsibilities differ from company to company. This incremental acquisition of knowledge will begin to build a clear picture of what candidates do on a day-to-day basis; their career path will vary, depending on the company that they work with and which businesses they are most likely to find the change they are looking for at.

Step-by-step, call by call, knowledge builds; but only if you are curious enough to ask the right questions.

           Integrity

Reputations take years to build, and just seconds to destroy. Working with honest intentions and integrity are the foundations from which your career will flourish. Never sacrifice your values and integrity chasing short-term wins. Do what you say you are going to do, work with pure intentions, and focus on what is best for your candidates and your clients.

If you can stand behind your actions, and know that you worked with pure intentions, it is much easier to resolve disputes or conflicts when they arise as you can talk openly about how you have arrived at that moment and focus on how you move forwards, rather than trying to cover your tracks.

Lack of integrity is one of people's biggest bugbears with recruitment. While you can’t control the actions of others, you will always have power over your own actions.

How you show up and how you treat those you come in contact with, will shape your reputation and ultimately decide whether people will work with you.

           Drive

I remember reading a quote by David Brooks in my first month of recruitment:

“Almost every successful person begins with two beliefs: the future can be better than the present, and I have the power to make it so.”

This quote has always stuck with me. Recruitment is an industry that can provide an earning potential that is hard to find elsewhere, but also a level of job satisfaction that is nearly unparalleled; but only if you’re willing to show up every day seize the opportunity.

As you navigate your recruitment career, you will undoubtedly come across those who are happy to do as little as possible, and yet surprised at (sometimes resentful of) the success of others.

You will also work with people who never settle; they always want to do more and be more successful than they were yesterday. Every placement not only impacts their earnings, but they also represent someone landing their dream job or a client filling a role that will allow them to achieve their goals. Every one of these placements is a hit of dopamine and a boost in self-worth and satisfaction.

Drive feeds success, success feeds confidence and self-worth, confidence and self-worth drive engagement, and those people who feel engaged and empowered almost always strive to be better... But it starts with drive

           Resilience

Anything meaningful takes time to achieve. There will be countless times where things don't go your way. You will be competing with recruiters with more experience, knowledge and deeper networks, the first year is the hardest. Recruitment can be a dark place when you are not getting the results you want. Just as success can impact you're self worth and confidence so too can a lack of success.

Having the resilience to show up everyday, work with empathy, curiosity, integrity and drive and belief that tomorrow can be better than today; will be crucial in getting you through the first 12 months and establishing your presence in your given field.

Tips On How To Write A CV

Clear, Concise and Easy to Read!

Hey there, job seekers! Let's talk about the ultimate secret weapon in your job hunt arsenal: your CV (or Resume, if you're feeling fancy). Yep, that little piece of paper (or digital document) can mean the difference between scoring an interview and getting hit with the dreaded rejection email. So, buckle up and let's dive into the world of crafting a killer CV that'll have hiring managers begging to meet you.

Picture this: you're a hiring manager swamped with stacks of CVs, all vying for your attention. In this fast-paced, first-impressions-count world, a well-presented and easy-to-follow CV can catch an employer's eye faster than a squirrel chasing a nut. Seriously, folks, this stuff matters!

But hold on, before you start sweating over fonts and margins, let's break down the essentials you need to include in your CV. Ready? Let's do this!

Introduce Yourself: Ditch the generic titles like 'Curriculum Vitae' – it's time to own that page. Plaster your name, professional title, and contact deets right at the top, where they're impossible to miss. Oh, and while we're at it, leave your full address in the past – just your suburb will do. If you're feeling fancy, drop a link to your LinkedIn profile here.

Show Your Personality: You've got a limited space to sell yourself, so use it wisely. Whip up a personal profile that packs a punch. Tell 'em who you are, what you bring to the table, and where you're headed. Oh, and tailor it to the job you're eyeing. Think of it as your elevator pitch on paper – short, sweet, and oh-so-effective.

The Education Scoop: Your education's gotta make an appearance too. Flip it into reverse chronological order – that's the fancy way of saying start with your latest education experience. Slap down the institution, dates, and your hard-earned qualifications and grades. Fresh out of school? Stack it like a sandwich – institution, dates, then your shiny degree.

Work That Experience: Time to flaunt your professional journey. Starting with your most recent gig, list your previous jobs, internships, and work experiences. But don't just stop there – drop some juicy details about your job title, employer, and dates. Then, hit 'em with those responsibilities, skills, and project experience. Pro tip: sprinkle in some action verbs and numbers to really make your impact shine.

Skills and More: Got skills? Of course, you do! If they're relevant to the job you're gunning for, shout about 'em in a dedicated skills section right under your personal profile. But remember, quality beats quantity – aim for four or five top-notch abilities that'll make those hiring peepers widen.

Accreditations and Memberships: Are you a CPEng or a professional Engineer? Pop these at the end in their own section along with any associations you are a member of.

Unleash Your Inner Hobbyist: Feeling a little empty on that CV? Toss in some hobbies and interests at the tail end. It's like seasoning for your CV – it adds that extra flavour and shows how you'd blend into the company's culture.

            Now, let's talk aesthetics:

Size Matters: Keep it short and sweet – ideally, three pages max. Hiring managers are speed-readers, so make every word count.

Headers for Days: Bold headings are your BFFs. They make your CV easy on the eyes and help it flow like a perfectly curated playlist.

Fonts & Margins: Think of it like a style makeover – choose a clear font (Calibri or Arial are classic choices) and play around with font sizes. Aim for 10-12pt for the body and 14-18pt for those headings. Margins? Keep 'em around 2.5cm – too narrow, and it'll look like a text tornado hit your CV.

Proof Is in the Pudding: You wouldn't wear mismatched socks to an interview, would you? Same goes for typos and inconsistencies. Proofread that bad boy like your job depends on it – because it kinda does.

So there you have it, pals! Your guide to creating a CV that's so hot, it practically sizzles. Now you're armed and ready to tackle the job market like a champ. Go out there, dazzle 'em with your awesomeness, and remember, luck favors the well-prepared. Good luck on your job hunt adventure!

A Roadmap for Thriving Amidst Change and Embracing New Opportunities

Hey there, fellow explorers of life's twists and turns! Today, we're diving headfirst into a topic that many of us may face at some point in our careers: redundancy. It might feel like you've been handed a one-way ticket to uncertainty, but fear not, my friends! Let's map out a plan and discover the opportunities that lie ahead.

           Embrace the Emotional Rollercoaster

First things first, redundancy can be emotionally taxing. It's okay to feel a mix of emotions – from shock and sadness to anger and confusion. Give yourself permission to process these feelings. Reach out to friends, family, or a therapist if you need a sounding board. Remember, it's a rollercoaster, but you've got a sturdy seatbelt. Take time to process and reflect on what you had enjoyed about your previous roles but also points of difference you are hoping for in the future.

           Financial Housekeeping

Let's talk finances. Create a budget to manage your expenses during this transition. It's also a good time to review your financial goals and make any necessary adjustments. If you have severance pay or a redundancy package, use it wisely. Money and the fear of the unknown are almost always the most stressful parts. Once you have a clear understanding of your financial situation, you should be able to understand exactly how much time you have to secure your next role before things get tight. This clarity will help you avoid jumping into the first role you find and rather than waiting for a role that will keep you engaged and fulfilled for years to come. It also allows you to set expectations about when you'd like to start your next role to give you time to explore your options.

           Update Your Professional Arsenal

Now that you've had some time to process, let's get practical. Dust off that resume and update it with your latest accomplishments (Sourcey has a blog on how to structure your CV and what to include). Refresh your LinkedIn profile, including experience and projects, connect with industry peers, and join relevant groups. Investing in personal branding can open doors you didn't even know existed.

           Seek Professional Guidance

Don't hesitate to seek advice from career counselors or recruiters. Speak with multiple colleagues and even past managers to ask which recruiters they have worked with and who they’d recommend reaching out to. Recruiters admittedly have mixed reputations, so it's important to work with one that you trust and feel is genuinely seeking to understand what you want from your next role. Recruiters often are aware of companies' needs before they start to advertise, and good ones may open the door before the role becomes available to the broader industry. Avoid working with multiple agents where possible. A recruiter will work much harder to assist you if they know that they are able to invest time in finding the right role for you rather than it being a race.

           Explore New Horizons

Sometimes redundancy can be a blessing in disguise, leading you to uncharted territories. Drop your preconceived ideas of companies' reputations and meet with businesses. Everyone’s experiences and journeys with a company are different; don’t let someone else’s journey dictate yours. Be open to different job roles, industries, and companies. Your skills are your compass, and there are numerous paths to success.

           Network, Network, Network!

In the digital age, networking has never been more accessible. Attend virtual events, reach out to old colleagues, and use social media to connect with professionals in your field. Work with your recruiter in this process so that you don’t step on each other's toes. You never know who might have the perfect lead for your next adventure.

           Stay Positive and Persistent

Last but not least, maintain a positive mindset and stay persistent. The journey may have some twists and turns, but remember that each challenge brings an opportunity to grow and learn.

Redundancy may close one door, but it also opens another. So, put on your explorer's hat and venture forth into this new chapter of your career journey. The path may be uncertain, but the possibilities are endless.

Who knows? The best is yet to come!

           A Practical Guide

Alright, let's dive into a topic that's on everyone's minds when switching jobs – resignation. It's like saying goodbye to an old friend, right? But fear not, we're here to give you the step-by-step breakdown on how to gracefully move on to new horizons. So, grab a seat, your favourite beverage, and let's get down to business!

Step 1: Locking in Your Future

Picture this: you've aced the interviews, dazzled your potential new employer, and they've given you the thumbs up. But hold on a second! Before you start planning your victory dance, make sure you've got that contract in hand. It's like your roadmap to the new gig, laying out your role, the moolah, perks, and when you'll be diving in. Make sure every detail is aligned with what you discussed. Safety first, folks!

Step 2: Embrace Your Recruiter Sidekick

Ever wished for someone to help you navigate through tricky situations? That's where your trusty recruiter comes in. They're like your personal career co-pilot. They've got the insider scoop on the company, role insights, and even a ready-to-go resignation template. These folks are your lifeline throughout this process, ready to help when those pre-resignation nerves strike.

           Step 3: Crafting Your Goodbye

Now it's time to put pen to paper, well, metaphorically speaking. Your resignation letter is your ticket out, so make it count. It's a simple piece of communication, including your name, position, when you'll be leaving, and a heartfelt thanks for the journey. Keep it short and sweet – oh, and don't forget to fire off a digital copy, just in case. Trust us, templates are a lifesaver here!

           Step 4: The Heart-to-Heart

Now comes the moment of truth – talking to your boss. Take a deep breath, you've got this! Here's a sample script to make it smoother:

"Hi [Manager's Name], I've got something important to discuss. I've decided to move on to new opportunities and will be submitting my resignation. This wasn't an easy choice, but it's all about my professional growth. Happy to chat more in my exit interview. As per my contract, I'll be wrapping up in [notice period], with my last day on [date]. Thanks for everything."

No need to spill all the details – that's what the exit interview is for. Keep it focused and to the point.

           Step 5: Departure with Grace

Leaving on a high note is like signing off a great conversation. You want to make sure you're remembered positively.

           Here's the plan:

Stick to your notice period – it's in the contract for a reason.

Keep delivering your A-game during the transition.

Stay mum about any office gripes – it's a small world out there!

Send out thank-yous to those who've been part of your journey – a classy way to sign off.

Final Thoughts: Embrace the New Adventure

And there you have it! Resigning might seem daunting, but with these steps, you're well-equipped to handle it with finesse.

What benefits are there in working with a Recruiter?

Today, we're going to talk about an important aspect of your job search journey: working with recruiters. Whether you're a seasoned professional or just starting your career, the decision to collaborate with a recruiter can significantly impact your job search process. So, let's dive right into it and explore whether working with a recruiter is the right choice for you and how to gauge their potential to enhance your job search.

           Why Consider a Recruiter?

You might be wondering, "Why should I even consider working with a recruiter? Can't I handle my job search on my own?" Well, you certainly can, and many professionals do just that. However, recruiters can bring a wealth of benefits to the table:

            Industry Insights:

Recruiters often have extensive knowledge about the job market, including current trends, in-demand skills, and company cultures. This information can be invaluable when making career decisions.

            Access to Hidden Opportunities:

Not all job openings are publicly advertised. Recruiters often have access to a hidden job market and can connect you with opportunities that might not be visible to the general public.

            Time Savings:

Job searching can be time-consuming. Engaging with a recruiter can free up some of your time as they do the legwork of finding suitable positions and arranging interviews for you.

            Tailored Matches:

A good recruiter will take the time to understand your skills, preferences, and career goals. They will then match you with positions that align with your aspirations.

How to Decide if a Recruiter is Right for You?

Now that you know the advantages of working with a recruiter, it's essential to consider a few factors before deciding:

            Clear Communication:

Reach out to potential recruiters and assess their communication style. Are they responsive, attentive, and willing to answer your questions? Good communication is crucial for a successful partnership.

            Reputation and Specialisation:

Research the reputation of the recruiter or recruitment agency. Look for specialists in the industry as they will have a better understanding of your needs.

            Transparency and Integrity:

A trustworthy recruiter will be upfront about the process, the companies they represent, and any fees involved. Be cautious of those who promise too much or seem evasive.

            Track Record:

Check if the recruiter has successfully placed candidates in construction roles in the past. A recruiter with a proven track record is more likely to be effective in assisting your job search.

            Personal Goals:

Consider your own job search approach and goals. If you're willing to invest time and effort in networking and applications, you might not need a recruiter's assistance. However, if you're seeking specific opportunities or facing challenges in your search, a recruiter could be a great asset.

Making the Most of the Partnership

Assuming you decide to work with a recruiter, here are some tips to ensure the collaboration enhances your job search:

            Be Honest and Open:

Share your career goals, strengths, weaknesses, and preferences honestly with the recruiter. The more they know about you, the better they can find a suitable match.

            Stay Engaged:

Keep in touch with your recruiter regularly. Update them on any changes in your job search criteria or availability. This ongoing collaboration will help them stay focused on your needs.

            Prepare for Interviews:

Your recruiter will likely provide you with insights and tips for interviews. Use this knowledge to your advantage and be well-prepared for each interaction.

            Be Patient:

Finding the perfect job match can take time. Stay patient and maintain open communication with your recruiter throughout the process.

Remember, working with a recruiter is a partnership. A good recruiter genuinely wants to help you succeed, so finding the right fit is essential. Be proactive, ask questions, and don't be afraid to seek out multiple recruiters to find the best match for your needs.

The Perils of Playing the Offer Game

Why Leverage Isn't Always the Best Move

Hey there, fellow career climbers! Today, we're diving headfirst into a sticky subject: leveraging a job offer from another company to get a pay raise or promotion from your current employer. Sure, it might seem like a smart move at first, but let's talk about the hidden dangers and why it might not be the best strategy for long-term success.

           The Sting of Betrayal

First and foremost, let's address the elephant in the room: the betrayal your current company will feel when they discover you've been shopping around for offers. It's like a dagger to the heart of the trust they've placed in you. Remember all those late nights and projects you worked on together? Well, leveraging another job offer can shatter that trust and leave a lasting stain on your relationship.

           Reputation Roulette

Your reputation is like a delicate glass sculpture - it takes years to build, but just one wrong move can shatter it into a million pieces. Using an outside offer as leverage can be seen as a sneaky tactic. People talk, and word gets around. Instead of being known as the reliable team player, you might find yourself labeled as someone who's always looking for the next best thing.

           Stunting Your Growth

Think about this: if your current company suspects you have one foot out the door, they're less likely to consider you for their most important roles and projects. Who wants to invest time and resources into someone they think is about to leave? Leveraging an outside offer could effectively sideline your career progression within your current company.

           The Root of the Problem

The fact that you felt the need to seek opportunities elsewhere in the first place should be a red flag. Something wasn't quite right, and instead of addressing the issue head-on, you chose to look elsewhere. Rather than attempting to fix what's broken, you've simply sought an escape route. But remember, the grass isn't always greener on the other side.

           Burning Bridges and Lost Opportunities

Let's not forget the bridge you might burn with the company that extended the offer. They recognized your potential and went out of their way to create a role that aligned with your career goals. When you decline their offer after using it as leverage, you're not just letting them down; you're potentially closing doors for future opportunities with them.

           The 90% Departure Rate

Finally, here's a hard truth: statistics show that roughly 90% of candidates who accept a counter offer end up leaving their current role within 12 months anyway. Why? Because the issues that led them to seek a new opportunity in the first place often go unaddressed. So, what's the point of all that drama if you're likely to end up right back where you started?

           A Better Approach

Instead of resorting to the potentially risky strategy of leveraging job offers, it's often more effective to adopt a transparent and proactive approach to managing your career. Initiate candid conversations with your current employer to discuss your concerns, ambitions, and areas where you believe your contributions may be undervalued. By seeking feedback and working collaboratively, you can explore solutions that align the interests of both you and the company.

It's essential to recognize that your career is an ongoing journey rather than a fixed destination. Prioritizing the development of trust, safeguarding your professional reputation, and nurturing authentic relationships are fundamental to long-term success. In cases where your concerns aren't adequately addressed, it may be prudent to start exploring opportunities with companies that truly value your contributions and provide a conducive environment for your growth.

So, before entertaining the notion of playing the offer game, consider this alternative approach. It may lead you down a more fulfilling and rewarding career path that aligns with your aspirations and potential.

What we're hearing in the Market

Welcome back, everyone! Happy New Year! As I settle back into the routine, here's a quick overview of what's happening in the consultancy landscape:

            Tier 1 Holding Pattern:

Many Tier 1 consultancies are maintaining a holding pattern. While there's ample work and numerous projects in the pipeline, forecasting beyond 3-4 months is becoming challenging due to prolonged project approval timelines.

            Tier 2 Growth Realities:

Larger Tier 2 consultancies are grappling with the consequences of substantial growth over the past three years. Thin-margin victories led to significant headcount expansion, necessitating a continuous stream of work to maintain staff utilization.

            Stability in Client-Focused Consultancies:

Firms prioritizing core clients and repeat work over new business have maintained stability and consistency in their workload. This strategic focus positions them well for growth in the coming year.

            Sector Diversification Pays Off:

Consultancies with a mix of private and public sector clients remain stable, with sectors like primary and secondary education and health providing respite.

            Upcoming Projects to Relieve Pressure:

Major projects, including Melton Hospital, MARL, and the SRL, expected to kick off in the middle of the year, are anticipated to ease pressure in the tier 1 space, with potential positive effects on tier 2.

            Delayed Projects Anticipated in Q4:

Projects and proposals initially expected before Christmas are now projected to move in February/March, contributing to an uptick in workload for the last quarter of the financial year.

Expected interest rate drops at the end of 2024 are predicted to have a significant impact on private sector confidence.

While the highs of 2021 and 2022 might not be replicated, 2024 appears to be a year of consolidation, setting the stage for a potential uptick in 2025. What we're hearing in the Market

While there has been a slight reduction in the design phase work within Melbourne's construction sector, this is expected to be a short-lived phase. Let's take a closer look at the factors influencing this temporary lull and the promising developments on the horizon. ⚒️

In the private sector, there has been a minor decline in work, particularly in residential projects and commercial office buildings due to rising interest rates. Additionally, universities have scaled back their spending on new construction projects, partly due to the challenges faced in the wake of declining overseas student numbers. Furthermore, the delay in passing the Labour's housing bill has resulted in the postponement of several projects until October.

However, it's important to note that this reduction in front-end work is more of a normalisation process rather than a full-blown slowdown. Long-term partnerships between engineering consultancies and architects have been the foundation of the construction industry. Those companies that continue to invest in these relationships remain busy and are still focused on growth.

Despite these temporary challenges, several exciting opportunities are emerging. The Victorian Schools Building Authority (VSBA) is actively releasing construction work for new schools across the state, and the Victorian Health Building Authority (VHBA) is continuing to push forward with projects such as Ballarat Hospital, Footscray Hospital, Frankston and Warrnambool Hospital all running concurrently. Additionally, Melton Hospital worth an estimated $900 million project entered the full bid phase, adding further momentum to the industry (Call me if you want to know who are working on the two bids).

Looking ahead, the residential sector is expected to regain strength as interest rates stabilise and concerns of a recession subside. This will likely spark renewed activity in commercial office and retail spaces. Universities are also expected to green-light their pipeline projects as overseas student admissions normalise and revenue returns. Furthermore, the Victorian government's focus on the suburban rail loop is driving substantial investments in the design and construction of railway stations and associated infrastructure.

Moreover, the federal government's housing bill, set to reignite in October, promises a fresh wave of investment in public and affordable housing, further boosting the construction industry.

In conclusion, while we are currently experiencing a temporary lull, industry professionals foresee a ramp-up in new work entering the pipeline construction activity in the second half of this year and early 2024. As we navigate these waves of change, it's important to remain optimistic and adaptable. The construction industry thrives on resilience and opportunities for growth.

Stay tuned for the exciting developments that lie ahead in Melbourne's construction sector!
